Hand’Solo Records releases third Grandpa Funnybook’s Mixtape

Officially titled Grandpa Funnybook’s Mix-Tapingly Arranged Rapping Song Album 3!, this is the latest release from Hand’Solo Records.

Three years ago Hand’Solo Records partnered with Wordburglar to release a mixtape celebrating our attendance at Toronto’s Fan Expo convention, and the tradition continues as Grandpa Funnybook’s Mix-Tapingly Arranged Rapping Song Album returns for a third volume. In keeping with the themes of Fan Expo, the subject matter of GF3 is heavily weighted towards sci-fi, fantasy and horror. Wordburglar presents a couple of songs from his just released concept album Welcome to Cobra Island, More Or Les debuts the title track to his upcoming Dr Who mixtape, and Adam WarRock offers up an exclusive track about Loki (the one from the Marvel Universe), amongst many other nerdy rap tracks also featuring the likes of Random (aka Mega Ran), Ghettosocks, Beefy, Jesse Dangerously, Kabuto the Python, Fresh Kils, Dual Core and more. Hosted by comic book legend Grandpa Funnybook, creator of all your favourite Special Characters, and mixed by Peter Project, winner of Toronto’s first Sound Battle Royale in 2010, GF3 also features vibrant cover art by comic book artist Dave Howlett (Scenester, Slam-A-Rama). Nerds, rejoice!

Join us on Friday, September 20th for the 4th Annual Hip-Hop Karaoke Competition Edition! This year we’re welcoming special guests BLACK MOON! Buckshot and Evil Dee will be in the building to help judge the lyrical fury on stage, as well as give a performance to close out the evening.

We’re running the competition the same way as in past years: doors and sign-up at 9:30pm. We have 20 spaces available, on a first-come, first-serve basis, so arriving early is obviously encouraged if you wish to compete — spots are going to go very fast! This is the only fair way we can think of running the performance process — the competition is open to everyone! Song selection is also first-come, first-serve, so prepare at least one back-up tune just in case! Songs performed MUST be on our existing song list, found on our website ( ). We ask for no group/posse cuts (solo performances only) to keep things fair. Example: you can do “Scenario” by A Tribe Called Quest, but you have to perform it alone (no duo/group efforts).

Performances will be judged based on crowd reaction/participation, use of stage/animated performance, familiarity with material (i.e. memorization & delivery of lyrics), breath control, as well as bonus points for incorporation of creative dance moves. Lots of prizes to be won!
